I have no idea why the people in this picture look so unhappy, ninos. Their identities are known to me, however, so let's begin with that. Left to right are your uncle Judd who is 7+ years old; your great-grandfather Max Lanham, your great-grandmother Marguerite Deeds Lanham (we call her GG) and (ta da) yours truly Susan Lanham, known to you as your nonna. I am about four years old. We are standing in the yard at our grandparent's house in Weiser, ID in the summer of 1947 or 1948. We are attending a small family reunion of the Lanham family. Your mom labeled this picture "The Cro-Magnon Family" for reasons she will be able to explain to you. Or maybe she called us "The Neanderthals." Whichever, we definitely forgot to say cheese for the camera. But it was a fun day, including the plane ride from Boise to Weiser in the little Cessna airplane your great-grandpa was learning to fly. I'm pretty sure I smiled then.
We don't look as if we are having fun, but I think it was a good day for a bunch of little kids. Maybe the photographer was just a really crabby person or maybe we were waiting for dinner to be ready. I predict you will smile a lot when you are here this week and we spend some time playing with EM and M2, your Boise cousins. Can't wait to see you.
