Saying Goodbye to GG
EM was happy to see you, Weezie. She ran to greet you when we arrived at the cemetery. This is the first time you have been together since May 2009.
EM was glad to see you also, Clam, but you were feeling a little more reserved. You had been sleeping deeply until about fifteen minutes before we left to meet Uncle Judd and Aunt Sandy for the drive to the cemetery. That fifteen minutes included a diaper change, getting dressed, a few bites of oatmeal and strapping your car seat into my car. For two kids waking up in a strange place, I thought you were fantastic (same goes, except for the diaper, for your mom!)
Clam was still smitten with Uncle Judd. Actually he had been star struck by Uncle Judd's big white diesel truck the night before at the airport. He loved riding to my house in that big old truck. When we arrived at Judd and Sandy's this morning, Clam asked to ride with Uncle Judd. Since it involved switching his car seat and we were already keeping others waiting, we had to say no. Here Clam is shyly sharing his little yellow truck with Judd, who is oblivious to his little fan. Brit is taking pictures of GG's burial container, a royal blue velvet bag with a gold pull cord. Everyone has brought totems or gift items to bury with GG, symbolizing her favorite things. Mame gave her a pound of truly excellent ground coffee, a pair of sunglasses (she could not go anywhere without a cup of coffee and shades to protect her eyes which were sensitive from cataract surgery years ago) and a toy from some of their childhood games. Brit gave her a picture of GG's Arizona cowgirl boots, which fit Brit so she is keeping them, and a wall cloth decoration from the Mayan expedition. Judd brought some of her art supplies and I brought the title to her Buick. She was pretty well outfitted.
You kids ran about a bit, not understanding everything but knowing we were having a little party for GG and happy to be outside on a beautiful day. Grandma Faye, Aunt Sandy's mom, Uncle Randy and Aunt Kathie who took care of GG this last year, and Uncle Cole were all there. Everyone said a few words remembering GG. We enjoyed the thought of her being with Grandpa Max again, after all these years as Cole put it, "waiting for her on that park bench."
Aunt Sandy and Mame placed everything in the bag with GG's ashes. We all acknowledged the resemblance to a Crown Royal bag, and agreed Mom would have appreciated that. Whiskey was not her drink of choice, but Crown Royal was quality to anyone. It all fit neatly.
You weren't sure what it was all about, kids, but you conducted yourselves well, we were pleased and proud to know you.
EM wanted a closer look at the proceedings when GG's burial container was placed in the ground.
Weezie watched as Cole and Mame covered the opening; the cemetery burial crew would finish the task and relay the sod later that day.
Hard to tell who comforted who that day, but Uncle Cole is fond of his little niece.
Randy said a few last words blessing GG's entry into the afterlife. He also told her she tried him at times, stories we of course want to hear. We especially want to hear his version of the day she locked him out of his own house and taunted him through the glass door "Cold out there for you?") GG could combine playful with pesky at times. This is goodbye for now, GG but we will not forget you.
