Memphis Sojourn

This entry takes us back to August 2009 when I was driving home from Virginia and the months we spent together at the Summerhouse. Uncle Judd encouraged me to have some fun along the way and so I stopped in Memphis to see Graceland, the celebrity home of Elvis Presley. You probably don't know about Elvis, no reason why you should. You can research his name and history if you are interested. He was part of Uncle Judd's and my generation. Walking through the house and grounds at Graceland was fascinating. I gained perspective on how things change over time, which we often deplore (why can't things just stay the same, why do they have to change). Graceland has not changed at all; with Presley's death Graceland became a life and lifestyle frozen in time and the contrast with today is striking, to an extreme. I found it impressive, amusing and poignant all at once. His lavish lifestyle became somehow diminished and trivial in comparison to the excesses in vogue today. How much better it might have been to document his life and let the material things go. I bought some trinkets in the gift shop, snapped this photo and got back on the road.
