If you are like most children, ninos, it won't be long before you begin asking your mom where she goes and what she does all day. Your friends will say things such as "My dad's a teacher" and "My mom's a banker" and you will want to respond. Your mom can tell you how she earns her living. If you are reading this you probably already know. Meanwhile, your mom went to a meeting in this building the other day. It is the Thomas Jefferson Building and it is one of three buildings that house the Library of Congress.

This is a picture of the architecture in the Great Hall of the TJ Building. Isn't it elegant? One of the greatest things about your mom is that she sees and enjoys the beauty of the things around her. Many people who are surrounded by such magnificence no longer see it, but not Mame. For her, I think aesthetic qualities are a form of spiritual nourishment. That is a wonderful attribute for a person to have. Perhaps you have it also, I hope so. Your mom was attending an off-the-record meeting with White House staffers the day she shot this pix with her phone camera and sent it to me. She is sharing something of the incredible architecture that surrounds her.

Only your mom would think to send me this shot, from the interior of a bathroom stall in the Library of Congress. Notice how she has captured the marble ledge, beautiful window, antique wall paper and finished corner where two walls meet the ceiling, all in one small photo. I love how she draws your attention, how she focuses it on a view you might overlook if you were looking at the whole room. Don't you have an amazing mom,
ninos? She is such a lovely person, and I can get away with saying these things because I am HER mom.
