Merry, Merry, Quite Contrary . . .

Weezie, meet Merry Kitty. She hides out in the basement most of the time when you are here. I don't encourage you to get acquainted as she is old and a bit cranky. You may remember her by the time you read this, but I think not.

Here she is scratching her chin and peering under the deck. This is the location where we suspect the skunk hides when he/she is not prowling the neighborhood. Merry and the skunk have a loose acquaintanceship. Merry allows the skunk to eat her food. The skunk allows Merry to enjoy the backyard as if it were her own. We get an occasional whiff of eu d'uh-oh when the skunk does not care for the cat food selection of the day. This is about once a week or so.

Here Merry is lost in thought. I think of it as "getting lost inside one's head" which happens to Merry often and me sometimes. It explains how so much time can pass without accomplishment. Merry may have her own way of explaining it but if so she's keeping it to herself for now.

Merry belonged to your mom originally. She was in college in AZ and Merry was injured somehow. GG and I wound up nursing her back to health and somehow she never went home. GG and your mom both have a special relationship with cats. Me, I just open the cat food cans and change the water bowl. Clean out the litter box and pour fresh litter. I think maybe I'll draw the line at the skunk using the litter box though.

It's actually "Mary," but since mom has been caring for her most of her 18 years, I guess she's entitled to spell it the way she wants - it's more original and fun than my spelling, anyway. Merry was injured, most likely, by a car - a broken pelvis that left her with weirdly narrow hips after it healed, under Nonna and GG's attentive care. She has always been a very tidy cat - after vomiting on the floor (which she does all the time) she tries to cover it with something - a magazine or piece of newspaper. Pretty OCD, if you ask me.
