Reality Check: Meal Time

Seems like these pages are filled with pictures of smiling faces and children dressed in special clothing attending a planned activity. And Nonna is always happy and Mame is the nearly perfect Mom. Of course it's nowhere near that boring at your house, ninos. It's real and comfortable and downright pleasant. Your mom is relaxed and calm (mostly) and you are sweet and lovable and cantankerous and cranky in the flash of an eye. These are pictures of you being lovable while you eat lunch. (Of course you are always lovable. )

Little Clam prefers to wield his own fork, thank you. He does not want anyone putting food in his mouth, on a fork or spoon or fingertips. He wants to control whatever food finds its way into his mouth. Only rarely will he permit us to pop a bite between his lips. He will taste something new, but once that's gone, no more from you. It has to be on a plate or loose on the table where he can pick it up. He can be quite obstinate about this and I have learned not to push. Today he is a lefty; he switches back and forth.

Of course Weezie has learned to feed herself, she is quite adept with utensils. Unlike the Clam, however, she will allow you to help her without complaining. She is finally beginning to grow and put on a little weight, she was tiny for so long. She drinks vitamins in her milk and understands that the only time she grows is when she is sleeping. This helps her to nap now and then. Her magic wand allows her to transform you ("Zap you're a frog, Nonna") which may come in handy if she decides to pursue cosmetic surgery as a profession.

Mame is her calm, collected self. She has probably just finished making lentil curry (one of LC's favorites) or elk chili (ditto) or putting together a little green salad (Weezie) but she also makes lots of PBJ sandwiches. The kids eat organic for the most part, and LC is eating gluten free right now while Mame sorts some allergy-type reactions he is having. It's a good life, unfolding slowly and thoughtfully.
