The Keepers of Memories

"Take care of all your memories. For you cannot relive them." Bob Dylan Well, Miss EM this is another message for you. You're still such a bit of a girl, growing older and smarter and more aware daily; it won't be long before you surprise mom and dad (shown here with you, and about to depart for a night out) by graduating from high school and heading out on your own. Sometime after that the dust will settle and you'll begin to wonder where you came from. Not the birds and bees yarn, but something of the lives of your parents. We're all hoping to be around to tell our share of tall tales, but just in case we've slipped away, I'm saying that your parents have some interesting stories to tell. I won't try to do it, since the stories are their own, but I encourage you to be bold in exploring their histories. You won't be disappointed.
Your mama, for example, was in the Peace Corps. She has many tales of her adventures. Ask her about taking GG to visit Mayan ruins. It was the travel highlight of your great-grandma's entire life. GG would love to tell you these stories herself, and perhaps in her own way she will do that. But your mama is your best resource; try not to let her put you off.

Your mama was young and idealistic (balanced by a lot of common sense) and filled with energy. Isn't she beautiful? She knew she was doing something significant at a level that made a genuine difference in people's lives. That's an entirely different feeling than shuffling papers or making widgets (although the world needs a certain number of paper shufflers and widgets, true thing.)

One last peek at those Peace Corps years (your mama has a lot more pictures of those times, so this is just a teaser). Don't forget to ask and keep asking, EM. Someday it will be you and Weezie and Little Clam who keep the family history alive. Be sure you get the straightest stories that you can.
