Mame's First Birthday

Here is your beautiful mother, grandchildren,
on her first birthday.  I baked a cake and her dad brought her beautiful red flowers.  We didn't have much money, but I think there was a new toy or two.

Your mom was just learning to walk, using the edge of the coffee table to pull herself up, then walking carefully around it, reluctant to let go but excited to be on her feet and moving.

We invited friends for cake and ice cream. At the time we lived in a charming apartment complex in Houston, TX. They all came and brought there babies who were about Mame's age.

In this picture, I think your mom is studying our faces, wondering why she is the center of attention.  I bet we had just finished singing the birthday song when I took this picture.  "Why are you all looking at me?" she might be thinking.  I was looking at her because it made me happy to see how perfect and beautiful she is.

Everyone else might have been looking at the little cake, wondering if there would be enough.  There was plenty.  And it was good, one of your GG's oatmeal cake from scratch recipes.  Yum.

Happy birthday, Mame.  You are a long, long way from Houston now.
