Jammin' on Halloween 2009
Halloween 2009 was a memorable day. We had a wonderful time, packed with fun activities for Weezie and Little Clam. They were in costume from early morning into late evening, and they starred in every event. I am not saying that because you are my grandchildren, ninos, but because it is true. Here's Weezie in her Riding Hood costume. At first she wanted to be a fairy princess ballerina (thus incorporating her favorite things, a tiara, gossamer wings and tutu with ballet shoes and ribbons). Mame and I were intent on making her the best FPB we could, until we found the red cape. After that it was RRH all the way, but I think Weezie saw it a little differently. For sure, she loved the cape and absolutely lusted for the spangly red shoes, and she approved the plaid country girl dress her mom pulled out of the air at the very last minute, but in Weezie's mind she was still a fairy princess ballerina. Maybe it's more like she was a FPB in Red Riding Hood drag. Why do I think this? Because throughout the day when people leaned down to ask her "And who are you today, little girl?" she responded without fail, "A fairy princess ballerina." But she knew she was stunning, trust me. She ruled the stage. Next year I am thinking the Queen of Hearts. Clam could be the White Rabbit or the Cheshire Cat or the Mad Hatter. Or maybe Queen Victoria and Clam could be Albert. Or Catherine with Clam as Rasputin. Have to work on sideburns.
Here she is toward the end of the day, on her way for custard. Her cape was disheveled and her shoes are coming apart, but it did not occur to her to take any part of the costume off. She knew the custard crowd was another audience to conquer.
In the morning, we attended a Halloween party at her school. Here she is getting ready to try ring toss. Great school. Of course two thirds of the little girls in her class were FPB's of one form or another. Sans cape.
Scored some candy. Checking it out.
From school we went to a Pinocchio puppet show at the French Embassy. Fun stuff although a little violent. Weezie and Clam and I hid our eyes but Mame toughed it out, squinting through her fingers. The puppeteer was Italian (of course) and we think he was having a really rough day. Such language.
Afterward, Weezie and Clam wanted to check out the fountain. While I was walking away, looking for just the right spot for a picture, Clam stepped off into the pool. When Mame pulled him out, his shoes (new of course) were soggy and came off. Here Mame is trying to wring him out and put him back together, we had several more places to go. Clam, you remember, was wearing his Tiger outfit. His black shoes and orange sox were important to the total effect.
Here Mame is calming herself. You know that thing where your child pulls some stunt putting his life at risk, and you respond by wanting to clobber him. Inner conflict moment. Weezie is watching a shoe float away. Clam is wondering if he can get back in the pool now that his shoes and sox are off. Didn't happen. Everyone was tummy-growling hungry but the embassy area does not have many restaurants within walking distance. We were fortunate to discover a wonderful cafeteria in the nearby hospital complex. Trust me, this was not hospital food. A glass of French wine would have made the meal complete. We lingered here for over an hour until Clam slowly ate his fill and Weezie was ready to find a new venue and audience to charm.
That afternoon we went to a Halloween party in the neighborhood park. Weezie and her father are taking it all in.
Weezie checks out her loot.
The kids did some quick door-to-doors in the apartment building (residents hung a colorful notice on their doors if they WANTED to be solicited) and then we went for custard. Weezie finally removed her hood for the trip home (LC's ears and tail were off long ago, along with his still damp shoes). Note the left leg up here, a favorite sleep position. End of a long, happy day, one of the best ever (speaking for myself). Thanks, Mame for putting this day together, it was great!
