Marguerite: The Shy Sister

This is GG, officially named Dorothy Marguerite Deeds, at four years. A note written on the frame tells us this picture was taken at Emmett, ID where Grandpa Deeds worked in the sawmill. Isn't she pretty? She looks so happy.

Fast forward thirteen years and here is GG at seventeen, the age she graduated from high school and got married, in June of 1939. She was the first child in her family to graduate high school. To do so, it was necessary for her to leave home and board with the Baker family in Cascade. She had few resources, but Neva and Pearl (five and seven years older than GG, they had quit school long ago to work and/or marry) helped her with a little cash and some of their clothing. Without their support she would not have been able to attend; high school was a real luxury at the time for families like ours. Isn't she beautiful? She looks like a movie star. She edited the high school newspaper and was the go-to person in her class when someone needed help with homework. She also produced much of the artwork for school projects and special events. Grandpa Max must have wondered how he could be so lucky to find this incredible young woman attending high school in a teeny little town in Idaho.

GG was horse crazy from an early age. When her dad brought his team of horses in from the fields after a long day of plowing or hauling logs, little Scout (your GG) would run to meet him. He would swoop her up, give her a big hug and set her on the back of the near horse. He walked and she rode along side into the barn, talking about the day. GG was thrilled to have her dad's undivided attention and get to be on a horse at the same time. Years later, your Grandpa Max traded his tenor saxophone for Smokey, a big dappled gray for his new bride. GG rode Smokey summer and winter except in the deepest snow times, into town for mail and supplies. She loved that horse, he was always ready to run. Many years later, she used the same bridle to ride her horse Rugby alongside your mama riding Rainbow, in the Sonoran desert in Arizona. Over the years, GG rode horses whenever she had the opportunity, including the Harrington round-ups (more on that later).

I love this picture of GG with younger brother Art and sister Helen. She was probably married to Grandpa Max when this was taken.

I think this is one of the bathing suit pictures GG had taken to send to Grandpa Max when he was away in World War II. He was annoyed with her for doing this, but she just wanted to remind him that he had a lot to come home to. She was maybe twenty-four when this was taken, married for seven plus years, mother of two.
This is your GG with one of her high school friends. Her name was Marie. They double dated with a friend of your Grandpa Max. I think his name was Pat.
GG and her friend Marie, out for good times. They were sixteen or seventeen at the time.

Here's your GG in her new riding boots, serving as a hood ornament on Grandpa Max's car. This may be the car they were in when GG had to call for a potty stop. Grandpa Max was a big tease, and I have a funny story to tell when you are older.
Looks like GG managed to forgive Grandpa Max for playing pranks on her. She has always had a sweet nature, and never could hold a grudge. Grandpa Max loved her for that, and told Uncle Judd and me many times with wonder in his voice, "I have never heard your mother (GG to you of course) say a mean word about anyone." And that is still true, although he has been gone over thirty years now. GG may grow tired and a little impatient, like anyone else, but she is never mean or cruel. It is just not in her nature to be so.
