I love this picture of your GG's father, ninos. He is so relaxed and almost ready to break into a smile. His hands in their gloves seem clown-like, and his whole persona more closely resembles the daddy that little Scout knew and loved. Of course she was grown when this picture was taken; that is her niece Shirley (Pearl and Bud's daughter) playing beside Grandpa Deeds. The picture was taken sometime in 1942 judging by Shirley's age. Your Grandpa Max always said Grandpa Deeds was the hardest working man he ever knew, and that is the way I usually think of him. But this picture is a glimpse into the softer, gentler side of a wonderful man whose life consisted of mostly hard times.

This is Grandpa Deeds more as I remember him, outside with his dogs, talking quietly with the various men who stopped by his house in Council.

Grandpa died a few years after this picture was taken. His internal organs were damaged by the lightning strikes, and he probably did not seek treatment. GG says he died of hepatitis which sounds about right. She has carried this picture with her for many years now, and it is not in good condition, but it shows us the steely determination and quiet strength Grandpa Deeds possessed, and gives us a sense of how he confronted the hard times he and Grandma Deeds encountered. We also have GG's oil painting of Grandpa Deeds and Stover, one of his dogs. It is a nice painting and a good likeness, but it is only in knowing something about this man's life and character that we can value his legacy within the DNA we all share.
