This post takes us back to the summer of 2009 in Alexandria, VA. Christa is a friend from your old life in the Northwest, ninos. She had come to spend a month with you. Little did she know how challenging your lives had become, living in the summerhouse "sweat box" trapped indoors while mosquitoes raged against the screens. As a sign of our esteem, we gave Christa the room with the only air conditioner downstairs, which doubled as your playroom. Little did we know the owner's large dog slept in that room, along with thousands of fleas which were apparently also reluctant to go outside. Pending the dog's return in September, the fleas feasted on Christa. To avoid the heat, humidity and tiny blood suckers, we piled into the van and began to explore the area together. Christa made our fun times possible.
Mame discovered the northeastern phenomenon of custard (a special kind of ice cream with egg yolks and other nutrients) at some point in her DC sojourn. When she returned to the area with all of us in tow, custard was one of the first things she shared. We loved it, of course and immediately shared it with Christa. In our sightseeing trips, we made this our "let's take a break and have some . . . " treat. We also discovered several new custard locations (although none replaced your favorite little shop which shall remain nameless for now.) Clam ate his from a plastic dish with assistance. He was in my lap when I took these shots. Clam liked it but was not "into it" the way Weezie was. That of course has since changed, hasn't it, Clam?

Who does not remember their first ice cream cone? The thrill of that truly unique sensation, cool, sweet-but-not-too-sweet, never-get-enough meltiness on the tongue. Books are written on the topic of ice cream and the many ways we adore it. Weezie's face says all that and more.

Weezie demonstrating her custard removal from cone technique.
Christa is sans custard due to having eaten hers already.

Yup the custard is good at this place too.
Note the tiara. Most pictures from this time include the bejeweled headdress.
Weezie loved this tiara which unfortunately was damaged irreparably about six months later.

Always the little squinty eyes of satisfaction.

"Go away and let me eat this!"
Cousin EM likes ice cream, ninos. Maybe she will share her favorite place when you come to visit next month. Uncle Judd and Aunt Sandy know how to get there. Wonder what her favorite flavor is? Mine's vanilla.
